Choosing a cot can feel like a huge decision. With so many styles and ranges, it can be very overwhelming. Rest assured; All cots sold in Australia need to comply with the Australian Standard AS/NZS 2172-2003 so no need to worry about your little one’s safety when they turn into a mini break dancer and move around the cot alot! The biggest decision when it comes to choosing a cot is your personalised style and also if you wanted the cot to last longer and turn into a toddler bed. Some cots even turn into a lounger. Also, because there are multiple sizes of cots on offer, you can choose the size that will best fit your space.
What to consider when buying the ideal cot
A drop side
In Australia, drop side cots are completely safe. They have locking mechanisms that only allow the drop side to come down from the outside, so even the cheekiest toddler can’t figure it out. Some cots will come complete with one drop size and other cots will not have any drop sides. Because all cots have a 2 level adjustable base, even if you don’t have a dropside – its easy to get your baby in and out the cot. I love the Grotime Linden Cot as its sleek design adds a touch of style to any nursery.
Size can matter
If you have the space, go for a larger cot. Babies and toddlers tend to move around a lot in their sleep, and a larger cot gives them more room to avoid bumps. The Babyrest Bailey Cot is that little bit bigger and with its 3-in-1 adaptability: transitions from cot to toddler bed or daybed (Junior bedrail sold separately). But if space is tight, don’t worry—your baby will soon get used to their surroundings. Please make sure when choosing your mattress, and linen – that is will fit your cot size.
Mattress
When it comes to the mattress, choosing the brand that matches your cot ensures a perfect fit. You want the mattress to fit snugly with no more than a 1cm gap around the edge for safety. Think of it like a perfectly fitted pair of jeans—snug and comfy, but not too tight! As long as the mattress is the correct size for your cot, it will be safe to use.
Solid Ends
When choosing a cot with solid ends. Solid ends can be great if the cot faces a door, as they can block your baby’s view when you sneak out of the room. Trust me, I’ve done the crawl-out-of-the-room move many times! I love the Tasman Eco Willow Cot, its timeless and classic wood stain is just beautiful.
The most common question I get is, “What should I look for when choosing a cot?”
It really does come down to design, style, and aesthetic and the longevity ( cot only, cot / toddler bed, 3 in 1 Cots and Foldable Cots). You can choose from a simple design to something more modern and designer. Please remember, all cots sold in Australia need to comply with the Australian Standard AS/NZS 2172-2003 so choosing a cot is based on your personal taste and room décor.
A cot/toddler bed will allow you to remove one side of the cot and usually add a bedrail, to stop your little from falling out. This can be great for children who are not quite big enough for a single bed or ready to move to such a large space.
A 3 in 1 cot is great for longevity. If you don't plan to have kids close together and you will not use it again, the 3 in 1's can convert from a toddler bed into a day bed/lounge with some even converting to single beds.
